We also need to remember that these are percentages and not figures.

Tassie is much smaller than all the other states which in my opinion is why they are probably more connected for starters. I would not say that because of the above stats that they are more socially savvy.

Simon what are your sources for these numbers and what social media is being tracked when reporting those numbers?

It would seem Aussies generally are far behind the states with their use of social media and social bookmarks etc... What do you think will need to happen for Australians to catch on, or are we all too apathetic to contribute overall?

Thanks for your comment Social Media. The data comes from the Sensis Social Media Report, which was released last week in conjunction with AIMIA. The report looks in detail at consumer, SME and corporate use of social media in Australia. You can download the full report from our corporate site. There's a link near the top of my article.

On the question of social media uptake, there has been some evidence to show Australia is quite strong in this regard. For example, Nielsen data from 2010 tells us that while the US has the largest unique social networking audience, of the 10 countries they studied, Australian and Italian web surfers spend the most time on average using social media. You can see the article referring to this at http://blog.nielsen.com/nielsenwire/global/global-audience-spends-two-hours-more-a-month-on-social-networks-than-last-year/
